PROPERTY RESEARCH SPECIALIST GORDON RUTTY PROVES THAT AMATUER BOXING IS AS POPULAR AS EVER IN AUSTRALIA
The days of spectators only enjoying boxing from outside the ring have been over for a while. Amateur boxing can be enjoyed by men and women of all ages – even former organ donors!
At the age of 50, property research specialist Gordon Rutty made the decision to become a living organ donor by donating a kidney to a total stranger. Rutty has no regrets about the procedure, even though complications kept him in hospital weeks longer than necessary. “The person my kidney went to was married with children, they had spent the last five years on dialysis, hooked up to a machine. That was great to get that, it is an incredible feeling and very rewarding to know you have been able to give someone a better life, and potentially given them more life.’’
Never one to let any challenge keep him down for long, Rutty decided then and there that despite only having one functioning kidney he would make sure he stayed fit and healthy. A friend mentioned amateur boxing and he was immediately intrigued and after visiting the Fight Like A Pro Gym he was instantly hooked. The Gold Coast boxing gym was founded by a former professional boxer and his wife, Gavin and Michelle Topp. It was here that Rutty first heard about their signature program Fight Like a Pro.
Fight Like A Pro is a program that takes ordinary men and turns them into sparring professionals. Over a series of boxing matches, the program pits the fighters against each other until a final winner emerges. Just one year after making his kidney donation, Gordon Rutty entered the program under the name Gordon Rutty “Baby Face” Rutty.
While he did not go on to win the tournament, the program is soon entering its 30th season and Gordon Rutty plans on entering again. He still finds time to squeeze in boxing between his work as founder of the Smart Property Research Group and being a happily married father of three. It shows his dedication to his personal motto – “Step out of my comfort zone, it was this or swim with sharks”.
Don’t be surprised if you hear of him again when he wins!
